Critical Reflection: Project work
Working on the group project about drones for disaster relief and medical deliveries was a deeply enriching experience. We began by identifying areas in mechanical engineering where innovation could make a meaningful impact. A teammate suggested drones for disaster relief, and we collectively researched existing companies, such as Zipline. Recognizing the potential for improvement, we decided to focus on integrating a tilt-rotor propulsion system to enhance drone efficiency. My primary role was to explore the importance of fast medical deliveries, advancements in drone technology, and the potential effects of adopting a full tilt-rotor design. I concentrated on the specific challenges in underserved areas like Indonesia, with its vast archipelago of over 17,000 islands, where timely medical deliveries can be lifesaving.
This experience highlighted the importance of balancing technical research with real-world applications. Researching tilt-rotor systems broadened my understanding of aerodynamics and propulsion. Additionally, studying Indonesia’s geography deepened my appreciation for the societal impact of our innovation. Collaboration was key throughout the project. While I was confident in my research skills, integrating findings with the team’s input sometimes proved challenging, especially when aligning technical details with broader goals. However, by actively engaging in discussions, I gained valuable insights into effective teamwork and the importance of balancing technical and societal considerations.
Moving forward, I will refine my collaborative and communication skills by seeking more team feedback earlier in the process. I also plan to further develop my technical expertise, focusing on implementing complex systems like tilt-rotors in other innovative contexts. This project emphasized the critical role of engineering innovations in solving global challenges, inspiring me to further explore the intersection of technology and humanitarian needs in future endeavors.
