Critical Reflection: Module Learning

At the start of the Critical Thinking module, I thought of critical thinking as simply a set of logical skills that helped in making reasoned decisions. However, as I progressed through the course, I realized that critical thinking encompasses much more. It’s about questioning assumptions, analyzing diverse perspectives, and making decisions based on evidence and reasoning. One of the key moments in my journey was realizing that critical thinking isn’t just a skill for academics but a way to approach all aspects of life, from problem-solving to communication. A significant area of growth for me was in presenting. Initially, I felt nervous and unsure about my ability to articulate ideas clearly to an audience. Over time, through consistent practice and feedback, I became much more confident in my presentations.

As I delved deeper into the course, I noticed significant improvements in my ability to analyze arguments, identify logical fallacies, and evaluate the strength of different viewpoints. I became more confident in breaking down complex problems into smaller, manageable parts and identifying potential biases, both in my thinking and in others. Presenting my ideas became easier as I learned to structure my thoughts clearly and speak with greater conviction. One of the challenges I encountered was the difficulty in overcoming my own biases, especially when presented with conflicting viewpoints. However, through continuous reflection and practice, I learned to approach these situations with a more open mind and a focus on evidence.

Looking ahead, I recognize that the skills I’ve developed in critical thinking will be invaluable, not only for academic purposes but also for my future career. I intend to continue practicing these skills, particularly in decision-making and problem-solving. In group work, I’ve learned the importance of engaging with diverse opinions and actively seeking constructive feedback. My improved presentation skills have given me the confidence to express my ideas more effectively, which I plan to carry forward into all future professional and academic settings. I believe that the ability to think critically and present ideas clearly will serve as a foundation for all the challenges I may face, both personally and professionally. To quote Professor Brad Blackstone, "Create order from chaos".
